Murray State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the hiring of assistant coach James Kane, who joins the Racers after two seasons at the University of Alabama.
“I am very excited to add James to our coaching staff,” Prohm said. “He will provide great energy and work ethic. I love the fact that James has been around winning programs, and he understands the direction we want to go here at Murray State.”
"I am grateful and excited to join the Murray State Basketball program,” Kane said. “The Racers have a great winning tradition and the community has a lot of pride in the team. Coach Prohm is passionate, hard working and has a great relationship with his players. I look forward to working with and learning from Coach Prohm and the rest of the staff, while bringing my own energy and passion to the program.”
Kane was Alabama's video coordinator and served in the same role for two seasons at VCU, all under Head Coach Anthony Grant. At VCU, Kane was part of the staff that guided the Rams to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. He spent the 2006-07 season as a graduate assistant at VCU where he was part of the effort that saw VCU make the NCAA Tournament and upset Duke in the first round.
Prior to getting into the college game, Kane spent the 2005-06 season as an intern for the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats in basketball operations and scouting analysis.
A native of Oakland Park, Fla., Kane graduated in 2005 from the University of Florida as a merit scholar with a degree in sport management, and a minor in business administration. He also played on the Gators' scout team under Grant, then an assistant at Florida. In 2006, he earned his master's degree in sport management from VCU's prestigious Center for Sport Leadership.
“James has been part of successful programs while at Alabama and VCU,” Prohm added. “He has had an opportunity to learn from one of the top coaches in the nation in Coach Grant the past five years and these experiences will further enhance our program.”
“I also would like to thank Coach Grant and his coaching staff for the opportunity to work with them over the past five years,” Kane said. “I know I built relationships at Alabama and VCU that will last a lifetime. I hope to bring what I have learned and share it with Coach Prohm as he incorporates his plan to build on the successful and historic traditions at Murray State."
