Murray State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the signing of 6-2 guard Dexter Fields of Orlando, Fla., who will join the Racers from UAB.
Fields will sit out the 2011-12 season under NCAA transfer rules and have two seasons to play for MSU starting in the 2012-13 season.
“Dexter is a strong guard and can defend a couple of positions, but his biggest strength is he can really shoot the ball,” Prohm said. “He had some very good games last season in helping UAB win in Conference USA and reach the NCAA Tournament.”
“We've been very successful with guys like Isacc Miles, B.J. Jenkins and Latreze Mushatt, those players that have transferred in to play for us,” Prohm added. “It's great to get a player of Dexter's caliber.”
Fields played in 60 games over the last two seasons at UAB with a career scoring average of 5.3 points per game.
As a sophomore in the 2010-11 season, Fields hit 40 percent from the field (75-of-186) and 37 percent from three-point range (57-of-154). He hit 70 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line. He played in 31 games, with 12 starts, and averaged 22.5 minutes per game on the floor. His 24-point effort against Southern Miss (Feb. 2) included eight three-pointers, marking the second-most in a game in UAB history. He also scored 19 points against Central Florida (Jan. 29) and 18 against VCU (Dec. 21).
In his freshman season (2009-10) at UAB, Fields saw action in 29 games and scored 3.4 points per game.
Fields was a four-year letterman at Olympia High School and was named All-State three times by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. He led his team to second place in Florida Class 6A in the 2008-09 season, with a 28-5 record and a ranking of 30th in the nation. Fields scored 31 points in the championship game.
