Murray State soccer picked up its first win of the 2011 season, downing Troy on an early second half goal in a 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon at Cutchin Field.
The Racers (1-2) dominated play early on in the match, pressuring the Trojans numerous times in the first 45 minutes. Sophie Hargreaves found the side of the edge of the crossbar at the five minute mark, floating a ball over the Troy (1-1) keeper from over 20 yards out that deflected high. Julie Mooney recovered for a close shot that was saved by Ashley Branham.
Mooney had another close chance six minutes later, missing the net wide left after receiving a cross from Hargreaves from the left side.
Opening up the second half, Hargreaves nearly found the net at 46:26, finding a ball that was played through the right side of the box a few feet in front of Branham and the goal line, but her attempt was scooped up by Branham before it crossed the line.
Veronika Pribyslavska came up with the break through for the Racers, picking up a deflected clearing attempt by Troy inside the midfield circle and taking it down field, beating the Trojan defense and Branham for her first goal of the season in the 54th minute.
Amber Hanson nearly had a chance with an insurance goal at 68:25 for MSU. She was left open on a cross from Stephanie Gale on the left side of the box, receiving the ball after it cleared everyone in front of her, but her header was to the left of the far post.
Troy almost picked up a late equalizer with just over six minutes remaining. Ruth Sutcliffe fired a ball that mirrored Hargreaves' attempt from earlier in the game, clearing the top of the crossbar by inches.
The Racers dominated the match on the stat sheet, compiling 27 shots as a team with seven coming on net.
MSU keeper Yi Du picked up her first win in the shutout, making two saves in a match that saw just five shots from Troy on the day.
The Racers conclude a short two game home stand this weekend, hosting Bellarmine Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
