Murray State soccer nearly fought back from a two goal deficit Saturday afternoon, finding a late goal with time running out, but were unable to pull out an equalizer as they dropped the final game of a short homestand 2-1 against Bellarmine at Cutchin Field.
Trailing 2-0, Shauna Wicker tallied her first goal of the season at 87:12, heading in a hanging ball that had ricocheted around the six-yard box on a corner from Amber Hanson. The strike gave MSU life at the end of the match, but the Racers weren't able to mount a second attack before the end of the match.
Bellarmine got on the scoreboard early in the match, scoring on its first shot of the game as Brianna Simmons found Jessie York wide open for a header inside the box near the far post to take a 1-0 lead.
The Knights doubled their advantage in the second as Allison Menchak found a streaking Alyson Palmer down the middle of the field. Palmer was able to drive down the field untouched, beating Murray State goalkeeper Yi Du for the second Bellarmine goal of the game.
The Racers were able to tally more shots and had more shots on goal than Bellarmine, outshooting the Knights 18-8 with an 8-4 SOG advantage, but a large majority of the MSU attacks came on shots from a distance or were taken right at BU keeper Amy Kunowski.
Murray State heads to Florida next weekend as it will participate in the 2011 Dafeldecker Classic hosted by South Florida, with games against College of Charleston and USF.
