Racers Fall in Two Matches at Saluki Invitational

Senior Teresa Krog earned her second accolades of the season, earning Saluki Invitational All-Tournament Honors. The Elgin, Ill., native tallied 32 kills, a .219 hitting percentage (32k-11e-96ta) and seven digs in three matches.
The Racers battled through a long first set, but fell to Memphis, 3-0 (25-27, 15-25, 12-25) in the second match of the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.
Set one was a tight battle, with seven tie scores and two lead changes, which went into extra points. The Tigers took an early lead, with a 3-0 run, and led by as many as four (10-14) before the Racers fought back to tie the set at 16, with a 6-2 run of their own. The teams then traded runs and serves before Memphis went up 24-22 with a 2-0 run. However, MSU countered with a 3-0 run of its own to force extra points. The Tigers benefited from a final 3-0 run, to take the set 27-25.
Memphis opened the second set with a 2-0 run and never allowed the Racers to get any closer the rest of the set on the way to a 25-15 win.
MSU and Memphis traded the first four serves before a 4-1 run by the Tigers gave them the advantage for good. Memphis used several small runs throughout the set to earn the 25-12 win.
The Racers fell to Green Bay in the final match of the tournament, 3-0 (20-25, 14-25, 23-25).
Green Bay opened the first set with a 2-0 run, which the Racers countered with a 3-0 run of their own. The Phoenix then used a 4-0 run to take control of the scoreboard for the rest of the set, using several small runs to earn the 25-20 win.
Green Bay again took an early lead in the second set and used several small runs to earn a 25-14 win.
The third set was a closer battle, with nine tie scores and three lead changes. The Racers took a quick 6-5, off a 3-0 run, but the Phoenix countered with a 4-0 run that gave them a 10-7 advantage. Green Bay led by as many as four, before a 3-0 run by MSU cut the deficit to one (18-19). The Racers continued to push and used a 2-0 run to tie the set at 21. The teams then traded the next four serves before a 2-0 run with the score tied at 23 gave the Phoenix the 25-23 win.
The Racers will be in action again next weekend when they start the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference portion of the season. MSU will first face SIU Edwardsville, Friday, Sep. 16 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Charleston, Ill., to face Eastern Illinois, Saturday, Sep. 17 at 2 p.m.
