It looked like the Cougars would take the set, but on set-point MSU went on a 3-0 run to take a 25-24 lead. However, it was not enough and SIUE used a 3-0 run of their own to earn the 27-25 win.
The teams continued the battle into the second set, with seven tie scores and two lead changes. The score was tied at nine when the Racers went on a 9-2 run that gave them an 18-11 advantage. The Cougars battled back with two 3-0 runs to cut the lead to three (23-20) and held off set-point for two serves before a kill by Krog gave MSU the 25-22 win.
The teams again traded serves in the opening points of set three. SIUE took a quick 11-9 advantage before a MSU 2-0 run tied the set at 12. The back-and-forth battle continued for the next six serves and again the Cougars went up 18-15, with a 3-0 run. The Racers did not give up and three serves later started a 7-0 run that gave them a 23-19 advantage. MSU pushed through to take a 25-21 win.
The Racers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and put their advantage to five (7-2) before SIUE battled back with several small runs and used a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. The teams then traded serves before a 4-0 run by the Cougars gave them 19-15 lead. MSU countered with an 8-1 run that gave them a 23-20 lead. The Racers pushed through the end of the set to earn a 25-21 win and take the match.
