Coming off of its most well-rounded game of the season, Murray State soccer looks to continue building momentum as it nears the beginning of OVC play with a pair of non-conference contests this weekend. The Racers host Missouri Valley member Indiana State Friday afternoon at Cutchin Field before traveling to Jonesboro, Ark., for a Sunday matinee against Arkansas State out of the Sun Belt.
MSU was solid in all facets of the game last Sunday, shutting down a potent South Florida scoring attack over 110 minutes in a double overtime 0-0 draw. Both teams had scoring opportunities throughout the game, the Racers coming out after halftime with seven shots in the second half and USF hitting the crossbar in the first half and the post in the first overtime session.
"I really felt like we were inspired, we knew we were going to go up against really good competition and they really raised their level of soccer savvy," head coach Beth Acreman said. "Their intensity was increased, and it was a great result for us to tie them in double overtime. Obviously we've struggled giving up goals this season and this was a great way to come out with a shutout against a top team."
Murray State goalkeeper Yi Du kept the Bulls off the scoreboard with six seconds remaining in the contest, saving a penalty kick in the bottom left corner of the net on the final play of the game.
Indiana State enters Friday's action with one win this season against the OVC, having defeated SIUE in its last match. The Sycamores needed overtime to pick up the win, scoring in the fourth minute on a goal from Seyma Erenli. The contest was their second straight in extra-time, having lost earlier in the weekend against Ball State in double OT.
MSU is 2-2-1 all-time against Indiana State, losing 2-0 the last time the teams played in 2006.
Arkansas State has lost two straight entering Sunday's match, dropping a 4-2 decision Sunday against UT Martin. The Red Wolves allowed four straight goals in the first 60 minutes, cutting the lead in half with a pair of goals in the 84th and 87th minutes.
The Racers are 3-3 all-time against ASU, winning 3-2 in the last meeting between the two schools in 2006.
"We really need to go into these last two non-conference games with the mentality that we're ready for conference play," Acreman said. "I look for us to keep the intensity high on defense and on the attack and pull together to do tactically what we've been stressing all season."
Following a weekend off, Murray State jumps into OVC action, hosting UT Martin Sept. 23 and Southeast Missouri Sept. 25.
