The Murray State women's basketball team earned is second-straight win, with a 73-57 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Jacksonville State at the CFSB Center.
The Racers (6-11, 3-3 OVC) were led by junior Mariah Robinson, who tallied 23 points and added five rebounds and four assists. Red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess added 17 points and nine boards, while junior Tessa Elkins contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle with both teams going on large and small runs and trading baskets. The teams traded shots for the first two minutes and they both went cold and didn't make a basket for nearly three minutes. The Racers were the first to break the scoreless streak, and with the last shot before the draught, went on a 9-0 run to take a 13-6 advantage. Both teams again traded baskets for the next two minutes before JSU started a 13-5 run to take a 26-22 lead, with 4:45 remaining to play. The final minutes were a battle again, with MSU winning the battle with an 8-4 run to go into the locker room with a 33-30 lead.
In the first two minutes of the second half the Racers built their lead to six points before the Gamecocks tied the game at 40 over the next five minutes with a 6-0 run. The Racers followed with a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to start building back their lead into double-figures. The closest that JSU got the rest of the game was an eight-point deficit before MSU pushed the lead back out to as many as 17 to earn the win.
Free throws and three-point shots were the keys to the win for the Racers. MSU hit 21-of-25 shots from the charity stripe, while only allowing the Gamecocks to get to the line 18 times (made 12). The Racers also hit 8-of-29 triple attempts to JSU's 1-of-12 mark from beyond the arc.
MSU will now return to the road for a single game before heading back to the CFSB Center next Monday night. The Racers will travel to Edwardsville, Ill., for their first OVC game against SIU Edwardsville. The Cougars are in their final transition year from NCAA DII, which means that they are playing a full regular-season OVC schedule, but they are still not eligible for the OVC or NCAA tournaments.
