Racers Drop 76-51 Decision at Eastern Illinois

The Murray State women's basketball team fell to 1-1 in Ohio Valley Conference action with a 76-51 loss to Eastern Illinois at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill.
The Racers (4-9, 1-1 OVC) were led by juniors Mariah Robinson and Tessa Elkins. Robinson tallied a team-high 11 points, while Elkins made it two-straight games in double figures, with 10. Freshman Beth Mahurin again led the defense with five rebounds and added four points.
The Panthers (9-4, 1-0 OVC) started the first half on a 6-3 run in the first four minutes. However, the Racers pushed back to take an 8-6 lead with just under 13 minutes to play. Then EIU took control of the stanza, going on a 16-3 run over a six minutes span. The run gave the Panthers a 24-13 advantage that they increased to 37-23 in the final minutes of the half.
EIU opened the second half with a 9-0 run, which the Racers then countered in the first 6:30 minutes of the stanza. However, the Panthers then used strong shooting to increases its lead to as many as 28 points on the way to a 76-51 win.
Shooting percentages and rebounds were keys to the game, with EIU holding advantages in both columns. The Panthers shot 44.8 percent to the Racers 30.5 percent from the field and .350 to .250 from beyond the arc. EIU also out-rebounded MSU 50-29, including a 14-9 mark on the offensive glass.
The Racers will wrap up their current six-game road trip, Saturday, Jan. 7 at Austin Peay. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tenn.
