The Murray State Racer rifle team used a strong smallbore from Bill Harvey and an outsanding air rifle score from Kirsten Moyer and Kelsey Emme to defeat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 4633-4619, Monday at the Pat Spurgin Range in Murray, Ky.
The Racers prevailed in the smallbore portion of the match, winning by a score of 2291-2281. Bill Harvey continued to establish himself as a solid consistent shooter, with a personal best 581. He was followed by Kyle Donnan (571), Ashley Rose (570), Mikey Burzynski (569) and Kelsey Emme (568).
"Bill did a great job today,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “He's really doing a good job following his match plan."
The Racers kept up the pressure and defeated the Cornhuskers in air rifle 2342-2338. MSU was led by another new face. Kirsten Moyer, a freshman from New Mexico, shot a 591 to pair with a 590 by her fellow freshman Emme. They were followed by Donnan's 584 and Rose's 577.
"Today I wanted to look at some other people in the role of squad team member,” Lollar added. “It's a different thing when you know everyone is counting on you and we need to know how different people respond to that situation."
"Our air rifle today was as good as it's been all year. Kirsten and Kelsey gave us a nice spark and the team carried it on through for the win. Nebraska shoots some very good air rifle, we needed the big effort and got it from everyone."
The Racers hosted former MSU All-American and Olympian Morgan Hicks who returned to Murray as the coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
MSU's next challenge is Saturday at Jacksonville State.
