The Murray State women's track & field team claimed fifth out of nine teams at the Illini Classic hosted by Illinois in Champaign, Ill. The Racers were the second finisher among the four Ohio Valley Conference schools in the meet and finished with 58.5 points.
“I am really proud of the way our girls handled themselves this weekend,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “They stepped up and performed really well and Alexis' school record was very exciting.”
The highlight of the meet for the Racers was yet another school record for junior Alexis Love in the 60. The Palmetto, Fla., native broke her own record (set earlier this season) and claimed first with a time of 7.54. Love also took third in the 200, with a time of 24.89.
Love was one of three MSU student-athletes to earn two top-10 finishes. Freshman Ashley Conway took second in the high jump and 10th in the long jump, while freshman Tonia Pratt earned sixth in the weight throw and ninth in the shot put. Conway hit marks of 1.63m (5'4.25”) in the high jump and 5.03m (16'6”) in the long jump. Pratt had a personal-best mark of 15.60m (5'2.25”) in the weight throw and also hit a mark of 12.15m (39'10.5”) in the shot put.
A total of 10 other MSU participants finished in the top-10 in their events, with seven also recording personal bests in those events.
The Racers will return to action Jan. 27-28 at the Rod McCravey invite hosted by Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
