The Murray State women's basketball team dropped an 80-63 decision to Eastern Illinois at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers (8-13, 4-4 OVC) were led by senior Kayla Lowe, who tallied a season-best 20 points. The Pikeville, Ky., native hit a season-best six triples. Red-shirt junior Erica Burgess was the other MSU player in double-digits with 13 points.
The Panthers (17-4, 8-0 OVC) held the Racers scoreless for the first 3:30 of the game and went on a 10-0 run during the span to take control of the game. MSU struggled to find their rhythm until the final two minutes when they went on a 7-2 run and went into to locker room trailing 40-24.
The second half was a closer battle as the Racers were only out-scored by one (40-39). The Racers used 6-0 and 10-2 runs in the final 10 minutes of action to cut the lead to as little as nine before falling by the 17-point deficit.
Free throws and shooting percentage were the keys to the game, as EIU earned a clear advantage in both columns. The Panthers were 24-of-30 from the charity stripe and allowed the Racers to go just 10-of-14. EIU also made 51 percent of their shots from the field and MSU was held to a 32 percent mark.
The Racers busy week continues, Wednesday, Feb. 1 at Morehead State with a 5 p.m. tip-off. MSU will then travel to face UT Martin, Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m.
