Murray State Basketball fans enjoyed a big night when the Racers' hoops teams held annual Racer Madness at the CFSB Center.
The Racers' traditional beginning of the college basketball season was also televised to the nation on ESPNU's Midnight Madness program that ran from 8 p.m. to midnight.
The night featured a 3-point and slam dunk contest.
The Racer men's team opens the season at home against Freed-Hardeman (Nov. 5) in an exhibition game. The season opener (Nov. 9) is a double-header when the MSU women's team hosts Western Kentucky and the men's team takes on Brescia.
The Murray State basketball team officially launched their respective 2012-13 campaigns on Friday night at the CFSB Center with Racer Madness.
The night was highlighted by ESPNU's coverage of the event, as Murray State was one of just 13 programs nationally to be showcased on the worldwide sports leader. The Racers were the only mid-major school to be featured in the network's coverage that also included: Baylor, Florida State, Georgetown, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
College basketball analyst Miles Simon reported from the CFSB Center and was among the army of reporters covering the event from arenas and studio for ESPNU.
The night was full of giveaways, contests, entertainment and the sounds of the entire Racer Band. Fans had the opportunities to win t-shirts, tickets and even $10,000. Another big part of the evening was the introduction of both teams, as fans got their first look at each Racer team.
Senior Mariah Robinson (Beaver Dam, Ky.) won the first contest of the night as she took down junior Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn.) in the women's three point contest.
The men's portion of the evening was kicked off by the unfurling of the OVC and NCAA banners from the 2011-12 season. During a speech from head coach Steve Prohm, he unveiled his slogan for the season “four in four,” a team goal of four OVC championships and NCAA tournament appearances in four years.
Following Coach Prohm, was the men's three point contest between seniors Isaiah Canaan (Biloxi, Miss.) and Stacy Wilson (Mullins, S.C.). The two tied in the first round, but Canaan was able to pull out the win in the shoot-off.
Up next was the dunk contest featuring freshman Terron Gilmore (Jackson, Miss.), senior Brandon Garrett (Phoenix, Ariz.), freshman Erik McCree (Winter Garden, Fla.) and defending champion senior Ed Daniel (Birmingham, Ala.). Gilmore and Daniel both advanced to the finals, where the freshman Gilmore upset the reigning dunk king Daniel for the title.
The night was capped off by a great Blue-Gold scrimmage. Wilson and Daniel helped lead the Gold team to a 38-26 victory over Canaan and junior Dexter Fields (Orlando, Fla.).
The men's team will open the 2012-13 season on Nov. 5 in an exhibition against Freed-Hardeman at home and will begin the regular season on Nov. 9 against Brescia, also at the CFSB Center. The women will also kick-off their campaign on Nov. 9 when they open the doubleheader that night against in-state rival Western Kentucky.
