Despite having its chances in each set, the Murray State volleyball team dropped a 3-0 OVC decision on Saturday afternoon at SIU Edwardsville.

In the first set, SIU Edwardsville jumped out to several leads. Though each time, the Racers able to battle back, even clawing their way back from five points down to pull within two at 20-18. However, the Cougars were able to close out the opening frame from that point to end the set on a 5-1 run and take the set 25-18.

In set two, the Racers came out firing on all cylinders and took an early 12-7 lead. Despite MSU's best efforts SIU Edwardsville kept battling back, eventually catching the Racers at 18 all. After tying again at 20, the Cougars were once again able to close out MSU in close quarters and took the set, 25-22.

The third set was a series of runs by SIU Edwardsville, with Murray State attempting to catch up after each. The Cougars opened the match on an 8-3 run, only to have Racers pull within one at 9-8. From there, the teams traded points back forth until MSU again trailed by just one at 15-14. However, that sparked a 10-4 run by SIU Edwardsville that resulted in a 25-18 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Freshman Emily Schmahl led the Racers on the afternoon with a match-high 11 kills, while freshman Sam Bedard notched 22 assists. Freshman Jodie Klein helped lead MSU defensively with 18 digs, also a match high, while freshman Alyssa Lelm tallied five total blocks, one solo and four assist.

With the loss, the Racers fall to 4-15 on the year and 2-7 in the OVC, while SIU Edwardsville improved to 9-13 overall and 5-6 in league play with the win.

Next week, the Racers will travel to Music City, U.S.A., Nashville, Tenn., for a pair of OVC contests. On Thursday, Murray State will visit conference-newcomer Belmont, followed by a trip across town on Friday to Tennessee State. The start time for both matches is set for 7 p.m.
