The Murray State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Belmont on Thursday night at the Curb Event Center in Nashville.

The Racers (4-17, 2-9 OVC) started slow, losing the first set. However, the Racers put pressure on the Bruins (12-14, 8-4 OVC) for the reminder of the match, only to drop the final two sets in heartbreaking fashion.

In the first set, the Racers jumped out to an early lead and enjoyed a 7-4 advantage. However, the Bruins responded by going on a 13-0 run that proved to be the difference in the set. Murray State attempted to battle back and matched Belmont point for point late in the stanza, but the Bruins had done too much damage early and took the first set, 25-16

In the next set, the Racers appeared headed towards a second set equalizer when they held a 17-13 lead late in the frame. However, Belmont went on to close out the set on a 12-4 run and take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 set victory

In the would-be final set, the Racers went toe-to-toe with the Bruins, with neither team enjoying larger than five point lead in the stanza. The set remained tight throughout with the Racers even earning the first set point at 24-23. MSU went on to earn two more set points, but was unable to capitalize on either chance. The Bruins then earned two set points of their own, but the Racers were able to battle back each time. However, on Belmont's third set point Murray State's luck ran out and the Bruins clinched the 3-0 match win with a 30-28 set victory.

Freshmen Emily Schmahl and Alyssa Lelm led MSU on the night with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while junior Molly Goodrich and senior Lia Havili split the setting duties and notched 16 and 15 assists, respectively.

On defense, senior Lydia Orf paced the unit with 16 digs while Lelm also totaled seven blocks on the night.

The Racers will wrap-up their trip to Nashville tomorrow when travel across town to take on Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
