Racers Drop Tough 38-35 Defeat at Jacksonville State

Jacksonville State's Griffin Thomas kicked a 38-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter and that proved to be the difference as the Gamecocks handed Murray State a 38-35 defeat Saturday afternoon at Burgess-Snow Field.
With the score tied 35-35, JSU took possession on their own nine yard line. The Racers looked to have teh drive stopped, but a personal foul was called on third down to extend the drive. JSU took advantage of the second chance and drove down for the winning points.
The Racers (3-5, 2-3 OVC) had chances of their own, but failed to capitalize on two fourth-quarter possessions. MSU was stopped on fourth down at midfield, and later threw an interception with just over two minutes remaining.
The Gamecocks (5-3, 4-2 OVC) struck first as Jermaine Hough intercepted a pass and returned it to the Racer 29-yard line, and Washaun Ealey needed only one play to go around right end for the touchdown.
The Racers responded on their next possession as Casey Brockman found Jeremy Harness for a 48-yard gain down the right sideline. a personal foul penalty put the Racers deep into Gamecock territory, and Brockman converted a 4th-and-1 with a two-yard touchdown run.
The MSU offense put together it's second scoring drive in as many possessions as Brockman hit Patrick Robertson for a 16-yard completions. A few plays later, Brockman became the OVC's all-time leader in passing yards with a 36-yard completion to HB Beauford. On the next play, Duane Brady went over right tackle for a 12-yard touchdown run.
The JSU defense got its second interception of the first quarter and set up the offense in the red zone. Four plays later, Ealey went over right tackle for a one-yard score.
On the final play of the first quarter, the Racers recovered a fumbled punt on the JSU 22-yard line. Brockman found Brady, who recovered the fumbled punt, for a 16-yard gain and Jaamal Berry went untouched over the left side for a six-yard touchdown.
The Gamecocks responded with a quick scoring drive as Marques Ivory capped the five-play drive with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Telvin Brown.
The Racer defense helped set up the next touchdown as Brandon Wicks forced a fumble that was returned 10 yards by Brandon Hathaway. Facing a third-and-long, Brockman found Harness for 15 yards and a first down. Three plays later, Brockman called his own number and went in for a one-yard touchdown run.
JSU closed out the first-half scoring by putting together a 19-play scoring drive that ate up 6:27. The drive was aided by an offsides penalty by the Racers as JSU lined up for a field goal. Ivory capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown pass to Alan Bonner.
The Gamecocks took the opening possession of the second half and drove down the field on an eight-play drive. The big play of the drive was a 31-yard completion to Bonner on a jump ball. Ealey went in from two yards out on the next play.
The Racers tied the game again as Zac Ross recovered a fumble, giving the ball to the offense at the 45-yard line. Brockman hit HB Beauford for 48 yards over the middle and Brady went in two plays later from four-yards out.
Brady led the Racers with 71 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He also added three receptions for 33 yards.
Brandon Wicks led the Racer defense with five tackles, a forced fumble, a pass break-up and a quarterback hurry. T-Ray Malone and Blake Salter each had eight tackles.
The Racers return to action next Saturday as they host Tennessee State. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and can be seen live on Fox College Sports.
