Women's Tennis Plays Strong at Southern Miss

The Murray State women's tennis team had a strong showing over the weekend at the Souther Mississippi Halloween Open. Erin Patton won the consolation final in her draw for the MSU, while three other Racers made it to the consolation final in their draws.
After losing her opening round match to Central Arkansas' Ana Buyukyan 6-4 and 6-2, Patton won back-to-back matches to take home the consolation championship. In her first consolation bracket matchup, Patton defeated Jacksonville State's Taylor Lefton 6-1, 6-0. In the final Patton downed another Gamecock, this time defeating Aleksandra Cmiljic 6-1 and 6-1.
Megan Blue, Carolyn Huerth and Carla Suga advanced to the consolation final in each of their respective brackets before bowing out. Blue lost her opening match in the “Orange” Draw to Helene Czudek 6-4, 6-3, but responded in her first consolation match against Southern Miss' Mackenzie Oskin, winning 6-3 and 6-1. In the consolation final, Blue was defeated by Louisiana Monroe's Justyna Kroll 7-6 and 6-3.
Huerth defeated Emma Pitre in the opening round of consolation play 7-6(2) and 6-1 before being ousted by JSU's Isidora Knezevic in the final 7-6(4) and 6-4. Huerth lost her opening round match to Carolina Masso.
Suga lost her opening match in the “Blue” Draw to Polina Konop, losing 6-3, 6-3. Suga bested Jacksonville State's Olivia Nyugen in the consolation bracket 6-1 and 6-1, before losing to Louisiana Lafayette's Nicole Breaux in a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6(4), 10-5 decision.
Ashley Canty won her first round matchup for the Racers as she defeated USM's Lauren May 6-2 and 6-2. Canty was bounced from the singles competiton in her next match by JSU's Raisa Guasti 7-6(3) and 6-2.
Suzaan Stoltz also competed for Murray State at Southern Miss. Stoltz lost to Central Arkansas' Bianca Strukelj 6-3, 6-0 in her first match and was downed by Isa Brita 6-3 and 6-1 in the other.
In doubles play, the duo of Blue and Canty cruised to the consolation championship in their bracket. Blue and Canty won matches of 8-5 and 8-4 to take home the bracket.
The tandem of Huerth and Stoltz lost their lone doubles match over the weekend, losing 8-4 to Pitre and Howie. Patton and Suga were the third and final team for the Racers. The duo won their first match 8-2 before losing in the second round to Mayagorita and Dashutina 8-4.
The Racers return to action next weekend as they will head to Arkansas for the Arkansas State University Tournament.
