Winners of its last three games, the Murray State women's basketball team will look to move the streak to four on Thursday night when it hosts Ball State at the CFSB Center at 7 p.m.
A season-low seven turnovers and the second double-double of the year from senior Mariah Robinson helped the Murray State women's basketball team record its third straight win at the CFSB Center on Monday night, a 63-55 victory over Lipscomb.
The Racers shot a season-low 22.2 percent in the first half, including a 17.6 percent performance from 3-point range and a 55.6 percent performance from the free throw the line. The poor shooting, coupled with Lipscomb outrebounding MSU in the opening stanza, led to Murray State trailing 26-24 at the break.
However, in the second half, the Racers caught fire and Robinson kicked it off by nailing back-to-back 3 pointers. Murray State shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 27 percent. The Racers closed out the game by outscoring the Lady Bisons 17-8 in the final five minutes, to capture the 63-55 win.
Robinson scored 15 points and tallied 11 rebounds to notch her second double-double of the season, while junior Erica Burgess led all scorers with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds of her own. Senior Kyra Watson was also just short of a double-double, as she had 10 points and nine rebounds. Of Watson's nine rebounds, eight came on the offensive glass.
On Tuesday, senior Mariah Robinson and freshman Erika Sisk of the Murray State women's basketball team were named as the adidas® OVC Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, for games played from Nov. 20-26.
Robinson averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds a game over two wins for the Racers last week. She notched a season-high 31 points against Evansville last Tuesday and capped off her week by recording her second double-double of the season last night against Lipscomb.
Sisk has had an outstanding start to her collegiate campaign and averaged 9.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game last week.
This marks the first Player of the Week honor for a Racer since Robinson earned her only other award on Jan. 17, 2011. It also marks the first Freshman of the Week honor since Robinson shared the honor with Eastern Illinois' Ta'Kenya Nixon on Jan. 18, 2010.
Thursday will be just the fourth meeting all-time between the two teams, with Ball State holding a 2-1 advantage. The only other meeting at the CFSB Center took place on Nov. 19, 2005 with the Cardinal leaving Murray with a 90-72 victory.
The last meeting between the two teams was last season, where the Cardinals took down the Racers 81-72 in Muncie. State's only victory in the series came in the first meeting on Nov. 28, 2004, also in Muncie, with MSU earning the 87-76 win.
The Cardinals are 2-4 so far this season under first year head coach Brady Sallee. Racer fans are no stranger to Sallee as he served in the same position at OVC rival Eastern Illinois for the past eight seasons. The Cardinals are coming off a trip to Florida where they split a pair of contests, winning at Bethune-Cookman, but falling to Stetson.
Brandy Woody led five Cardinals in double-digits with 14 in the game against Stetson. Nathalie Fontaine currently leads BSU by averaging 12.8 points per game and 6.8 rebounds per game. Katie Murphy is averaging 6.7 boards on the season and is the only BSU player to notch double digit rebounds on the year, pulling down 14 against IPFW.
Thursday's game will be broadcast on 1340 AM WNBS, as well as a free live video stream on the OVC Digital Network. Live stats for Thursday night will also be available on GoRacers.com.
