Racers Begin Prohm Season Two With Freed-Hardeman Exhibition

After a preseason that featured a visit by ESPNU on the day of the first practice, the Murray State Racers get down to business Monday when they start the 2012-13 season with an exhibition game against Freed-Hardeman. Tip time is 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers are ranked No. 23 in the Sporting News preseason poll ahead of No. 24 Notre Dame and No. 25 VCU. The top-10 of the poll includes: No. 1 Indiana, then Louisville, Ohio State, Kentucky, Michigan, Duke, Syracuse, Arizona, NC State and Missouri. The Racers received votes in the Associated Press preseason poll, but just missed cracking the top-25.
MSU was picked to win the Ohio Valley Conference's west division at the annual league media day (Oct. 23). The Racers were also the overall top vote-getter in the OVC, just ahead of newcomer Belmont, picked to win the east division.
Isaiah Canaan is back for his senior season after announcing in April that he would return after exploring the possibility of entering the National Basketball Association draft. Canaan enters the season 19th on the MSU all-time scoring list with 1,374 points. With another good season, Canaan who became the 38th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club last season, will be the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club this season.
The Preseason accolades have been coming in for Canaan as the Associated Press named him All-America as did The Sporting News. Canaan was also named the No. 1 point guard in the top-50 list done by CBSSports.com.
MSU's season opener is Friday when they play the Brescia Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. at the CFSB Center as part of a women's-men's double-header. The MSU women's team plays Western Kentucky at 5:15 p.m.
After the season/home opener, the Racers hit the road for their first appearance in the Charleston Classic (Nov. 15-18) at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The Racers meet Auburn in the first round. MSU will meet either St. John's or the host, College of Charleston in the second round.
The FHU Lions enter the exhibition having played twice already. FHU, No. 12 in the NAIA rankings, lost at Lipscomb Friday night 99-84 in Nashville, Tenn. Kyle Teichmann led all scorers with 23 points. On Saturday, FHU won it's home opener over Belhaven 83-63. Teichmann led the Lions with 19 points.
