Wooden Preseason Top-50 I John Wooden Award
Murray State's Isaiah Canaan was named to John Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 today by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Canaan, a senior from Biloxi, Miss., was a Wooden All-America pick last season when was the 24th leading scorer in the nation at 19.0 points per game.
Already this preseason, Canaan has been named All-America by the Associated Press and The Sporting News. CBSSports.com named him the top point guard in the preseason. The returning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, Canaan is also the OVC's Preseason Player of the Year.
Canaan and Creighton's Doug McDermott are the only two on the preseason top-50 that were Wooden All-America picks last spring.
The Wooden Preseason Top-50 is chosen in a poll of national college basketball media members. The list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who, based on last year's performance and team records, are the early front-runners for one of college basketball's most prestigious honors.
Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts are not eligible for the Preseason Top 50. The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the midseason list. Emphasis is also put on progress toward graduation and maintaining at least a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
The Wooden Award All American Team, a total of 10 players, will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament in March of 2013.
The 37th annual Wooden Award ceremony will honor the Men's and Women's Wooden Award winners, and will include the presentation of the Wooden Award All American Teams and the Legends of Coaching Award, which in 2013 will go to Kansas Head Coach Bill Self. The event will take place the weekend of April 12-13, 2013.
