Murray State's Ed Daniel became the first Racer this season to earn Ohio Valley Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week Monday in voting conducted by the league's sports information directors.
Daniel, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., had a monster week by averaging a team-leading 22 points per game and 14.5 rebounds in MSU wins over Bethel and Evansville. For the week, Daniel was 15-of-23 from the field for 65 percent.
He started the week against Bethel (Dec. 4) a career-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go with 14 rebounds in 25 minutes of playing time and followed that with 21 points and 15 boards against Evansville on Saturday as MSU pushed their road win streak to 15.
The week also marked Daniel's fifth and sixth consecutive double-double games. He has matched the last-best streak for a MSU player since 1982 when Ricky Hood had a six-game stretch. Vincent Rainey had a seven-game streak in 1997; while MSU's all-time rebounder Popeye Jones had streaks of 11 and 17 in the early 1990's.
Daniel is ranked fourth in the nation in rebounding at the last NCAA statistics update.
Daniel and the Racers (7-1) are taking semester final exams this week and preparing for a Sunday game against longtime rival Western Kentucky. The 150th meeting between the Racers and Hilltoppers tips off at 2 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
