The Murray State Racers return home Saturday to host the Valparaiso Crusaders in a 2 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The game will be aired by ESPN3. Racer Radio can be heard over the air on WFGE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com.
The game on the Racers' home court is only the second time they've met and the first time at one of their home courts. The only other meeting came in 1999 in St. Louis, Mo., when the Racers won 78-58 at the Hoop & Quill Classic at Family Arena.
Murray State (9-2) is coming off just their second fourth loss in the 44 games of the Steve Prohm era, which was a 77-68 setback at Dayton last Saturday. With the Racers leading by a point with 4:36 remaining, MSU suffered a 12-2 run to the Flyers. The loss snapped the Racers' six-game win streak but more importantly, it stopped their school-record road winning streak at 16.
The Crusaders (9-4), were picked to win the Horizon League and enter the contest at 9-4 after a home win last Saturday over Purdue-Calumet 79-51. Prior to that, the Crusaders defeated IUPUI (Dec. 20) at home 89-69 and had a 70-68 loss (Dec. 17) at Oakland. VU is led by Ryan Broekhoff (16.6 points per game), LaVonte Dority (15.0ppg) and Kevin Van Wijk (13.1).
MSU has won six straight home games since their last loss (Feb. 9) to Tennessee State. MSU won their final two games of last season over Austin Peay (Feb. 11) and Saint Mary's (Feb. 18). Now they've added wins this season against: Brescia (Nov. 9), Old Dominion (Nov. 24), Bethel (Dec. 4) and Western Kentucky (Dec. 16).
MSU's All-America Isaiah Canaan is closing on becoming the all-time leader in made three-point baskets. Entering the Valparaiso game, Canaan has 246 threes (an average of 2.1 per game in 112 career games) and is closing on Frank Allen's record. Allen set the mark of 251 from 1989-93 and has held the mark in the Racer program for 19 seasons. Allen surpassed Dan Mann who set the previous mark at 204 from 1986-89.
The Valparaiso game marks the end of non-conference games this season for the Racers, with the exception of the BracketBusters game in Feburary. The Racers begin the quest for their fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference regular season championship when they travel to UT Martin (Jan. 3).
