Racers Fall to Unbeaten UT Chattanooga, 5-2

The Murray State women's tennis team fell to an undefeated UT Chattanooga, 5-2, at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky.

The Racers (1-2) earned their first point at No. 4 singles from sophomore Carla Suga. Suga took a three-set come-from-behind victory from Emily Hangstefer (2-6, 7-5, 6-4).

Junior Ashley Canty took three sets to get a decision at No. 2 singles. Canty took the first set 6-3 before falling 6-1, 6-2 in the next two sets.

Senior Ashley Pierson was the last to finish at No. 6 singles. After dropping the first set 6-1, Pierson battled back to win the second set 7-6 (7-2) to Charlotte Bossy. The duo then played a tie-breaker set, with Pierson earning the 10-8 win.

In doubles, MSU came close to earning the point. The No. 2 doubles duo of freshman Carolyn Huerth and Suga first fell to Jenna Nurik and Kaylene Chadwell (8-2), but senior Cassidy Cunitz and Canty then evened to score with an 8-5 win at No. 1 singles over Alexa Flynn and Hangstefer. The point came down to No. 3 doubles where senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein battled with Charlotte Bossy and Shaina Singh to an 8-6 decision in favor of the Mocs.

The Racers will next be in action Friday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Kenlake Tennis Center. MSU will first host Belmont at 1 p.m. Feb. 17 and then face Arkansas State at noon Feb. 19.
