Murray State came out on the short end of close call at first base as Valparaiso capitalized with three unearned runs in defeating the Breds, 5-2, in the 2012 season opener.
The Crusaders (1-0) got on the board in the fourth inning as Will Hagel drew a one-out walk and came around to score on John Loeffler's single through the right side. Billy Cribbs drove in the second run with a single to right center.
The Breds (0-1) got on the board in the eighth as Ty Stetson and Brandon Elliott singled up the middle to start the inning. After a successful sacrifice bunt from Traivs Isaak, Brandon Eggenschwiler drove in a run with a pinch-hit groundout to first.
MSU rallied again in the ninth inning as Paul Ritzheimer singled to center field and advanced to second on Dylan Wheeler's sacrifice bunt. With two outs and two strikes, Noah Zipko delivered an RBI single to right center to tie the game.
VALPO started the rally in the 13th inning on a hit by pitch. Following a base hit, an error in the outfield loaded the bases. A double-play ball to short looked to get the Breds out of the inning, but the runner was called safe at first, allowing a run to score. A successful double steal scored the second run before Tanner Vavra delivered an RBI single to center.
Ben Mahar (1-0) earned the victory by allowing two hits over three shutout innings on Friday. Will Robinson pitched a perfect inning to earn the save. Cameron Wallace (0-1) took the loss after allowing three unearned runs in one inning.
Starter Tyler Beers tied his career high as he struck out eight over five innings. He allowed two runs on six hits in the no decision. Relievers Will Handlin and Bryan Babin three two shutout innings before Luke Shuemaker tossed the final five innings of shutout baseball, allowing three hits and striking out three.
VALPO starter Tyler Deetjen kept the Breds bats silent as he surrendered just four hits over seven shutout innings. Reliever Jarad Miller gave up two runs on four hits over two innings.
Stetson, Elliott, Isaak and Ritzheimer each collected two hits.
The two teams will play the regularly scheduled game approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
