The Murray State women's basketball team lost its final regular-season game of the 2011-12 campaign, 88-51 to Tennessee Tech at the Eblen Center in Cookeville, Tenn. Despite the loss the Racers (12-17, 8-8 OVC) earned the No. 4 seed for the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Championship, Feb. 29-March 3 at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville Tenn.
MSU was led by junior Mariah Robinson who tallied 14 points and four rebounds. Fellow Junior Tessa Elkins added nine points and three boards.
The first half started with a Golden Eagles, 7-3 run in the opening three minutes. The Racers then got in a scoring streak and used a 16-2 run to take a 16-11 advantage. However, that is when TTU took over the games momentum, going on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes. Another large run helped the Golden Eagles to put the lead out to as many as 19 points in the first half and take a 42-25 lead at the half.
The second half was more of the same, with the Racers struggling to get their offensive momentum.
Shooting percentages were the keys to the game, with TTU shooting 50 percent from three-point range (6-of-12) and 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field. MSU struggled to make its shots, hitting just 19 percent (4-of-21) from beyond the arc and 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the field.
The Racers earned a bye in the first round of the 2012 OVC tournament and will face the winner of the No. 5 Morehead State/No. 8 Austin Peay game at noon, Thursday, March 1 at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.
Notes: This is the highest seed that MSU has earned in the tournament since 2009 when they claimed the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed…it is the 14th-consecutive appearance and 19th overall for the Racers…a win in the second round would pit MSU against the No. 1 seeded UT Martin Skyhawks.
