Murray State's Isaiah Canaan has been named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association list of 20 student-athletes being considered for the 2012 Oscar Robertson Trophy.
Canaan is coming off another outstanding week in which he had his third 30-point game of the season with 32 against Southeast Missouri State last Thursday. Canaan's play this season has helped the Racers remain the only undefeated team in NCAA D-I men's basketball at 23-0 and 11-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. For the season, Canaan is scoring 18.9 points per game and was ranked in the top-30 scorers in the nation. He was also ranked 16th in made three-point baskets per game (3.0) and ninth in percentage (47.0).
Canaan, a former Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the year in 2010, was named All-OVC as a sophomore and heading to his junior season in 2011-12, was named to the OVC Preseason Team. He has also been recognized this season as Sporting News Mid-Season All-America and to the CBSSports.com Player of the Year and Bob Cousy Award candidates list.
Members of the association's board of directors chose the players to be included on the list as contenders for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, to be presented to the national player of the year by its namesake in New Orleans at the USBWA's College Basketball Awards Breakfast on March 30.
Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
