The Murray State women's basketball team rebounded with a 66-56 Ohio Valley Conference win over Tennessee State in the first of four-straight games at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers (10-14, 6-5 OVC) were led by junior Tessa Elkins, who tallied her first career double-double. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native garnered 14 points and added a season-best 10 rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess added 16 points and seven boards, while junior Kyra Watson contributed 10 points and five rebounds.
The first half was a close battle, with only two points separating the teams at the end of the 20 minutes of play. The first minutes were a defensive battle, with the Racers pulling ahead by five after three triples. TSU then tied the game at 13 and took a 15-14 advantage, with a9-3 run over a two-minute span. However, senior Kayla Lowe got MSU scoring again with a three and pushed the lead back to four (19-15). The teams then traded points and ended with a tie at 21, with 7:20 left to play. The Racers pushed their lead back out to five (27-22) with a 6-1 run. The teams again traded shots the rest of the stanza, but MSU was able to hold on to a two-point lead (32-30) heading into the locker room.
After holding each other to just two points each in the first three minutes of the second half, the Lady Tigers (8-17, 4-9 OVC) went on a 4-0 run to tie the game at 34. It was the first of five ties in the second half and four lead changes. The final tie came with 8:37 left to play (47-all) before the Racers used a 7-0 run over the next 2:30 to take control of the scoreboard for the rest of the game. The teams traded baskets over the next 3:30 before a final 5-0 run pushed the advantage to double-digits.
Shooting percentages and three-point shots were the keys to the win for MSU. The Racers shot 39.1 percent from the field (25-of-64) to TSU's 28 percent (21-of-75). MSU also hit seven triples to the Lady Tigers four.
The Racers will return to action Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host Southeast Missouri at 4:30 p.m. as part of the annual “Be Bold Wear Gold” night and a double-header with the men's team. The game time was changed to 4:30 p.m. to accommodate the men's game being shown on ESPN3. Fans are encouraged to wear gold to support the Racers.
Notes: The double-double for Elkins was the third for the Racers this season.
