Women’s Tennis Picks Up 5-2 Win in Final Non-Conference Match of 2012 Season

The Murray State women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Harding in the final non-conference match of the 2012 season at the Kenlake Tennis Center in Aurora, Ky.
The Racers (6-7, 1-0 OVC) fought through to sweep all three doubles matches, including a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 doubles. Senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty were the first to finish, earning an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Ling Chan and Benyapa Phumtip.
Senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein then secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Gina Cielo and Callie Huey at No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore Carla Suga and freshman Carolyn Huerth then earned a come-from-behind victory over Katie Huff and Chelsea Hunt (8-7 (9-7)) at No. 2 doubles.
MSU defaulted No. 6 singles after doubles play, tying the score at one. Suga gave the Racers a 2-1 lead with a 6-1,6 -2 win over Hunt at No. 3 singles. Huerth added a third point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cielo at No. 4 singles.
Canty then secured the win at No. 1 singles by defeating Chan, 6-3, 7-5. Pierson added the last point for MSU, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Huff at No. 5 singles.
The Racers will now play the bulk of their Ohio Valley Conference season, starting with a Saturday, March 24 match at UT Martin (2 p.m.) and a Sunday, March 25 match at Southeast Missouri (noon).
