The Murray State women's track & field team may have had just three participants at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame at Meyo Track, but all three made the most of their last chance meet before the NCAA Indoor Championships. Sophomore Sharda Bettis and junior Alexis Love combined for three Racer school records in the 60, 60 hurdles and 200.
“I am so proud of how Alexis, Sharda and Tonia performed at this meet,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “All three took advantage of the great opportunity presented to them and performed at their best.”
Love broke two records, including her own record in the 60. She started the day by breaking her 60 record of 7.54, finishing the preliminary heat in 7.45 and taking first in the finals, with a time of 7.42. The Palmetto, Fla., native then broke the school record in the 200, which she had been getting close to all season. Love, who was running solo in her heat, broke the record set by Heather Samuel (1994) of 24.02 by running 23.66.
Bettis then added a third school record in the 60 hurdles. The Dallas, Texas native finished the prelims in 8.65, .10 faster than the school record of 8.75 by Val Lemoignan (1983). Bettis also set a personal best of 7.96 in the 60 in the finals to take sixth.
Freshman Tonia Pratt was also participating in the last chance meet for MSU in the weight throw. The Michigan Center, Mich., native tied her personal-best mark of 17.79m (58'4.5”) in the event to take fifth. Pratt hit the same mark a week earlier at the 2012Ohio Valley Conference Championship.
Love still has a chance to advance to the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship, as her time in the 200 would be ranked No. 22 in the nation heading into this weekend's competition. The NCAA will announce the participation list Monday, March 5.
