The Murray State women's track & field squad had a successful day at the Ole Miss Invitational on Saturday in Oxford, Miss.
The Racers were led by Alexis Love who again showed that she has a place among the elite sprinters in the nation by winning both the 100m and 200m championships at the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex.
On a day when the temperature rose into the lower 90's on the last day of March, Love won her 100m heat with a time of 11.42. She came back in the final and won with a time of 11.45. Love won her 200m heat with a 23.66 and then won the final with a 23.18.
Love's surge this season is amazing according to Racers head coach Jenny Severns.
“Alexis is fully healthy for the outdoor season for first time in two seasons and right now she's improved her 200 meter time by nearly two seconds from a year ago, which is amazing,” Severns said. “Right now she feels great and she's just riding this as far as it will take her. It's exciting to watch.”
Kayla Crusham ran an 11:42 for a 6th place finish in the 3000m steeplechase.
Tonia Pratt had a good meet with a 5th place showing in the discus with a toss of 147 feet 11 inches. She also finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 13.37 meters and she was 13th in the hammer throw with an effort of 161-11.
The Racers had a 5th & 6th place showing in the 5000m run when Rebecca Hbetamu turned in a time of 17:50 and Carolyne Tanui had a time of 18:12.
The Racers saw Abbie Oliver and Brittany Bohn carded personal records in the 1500m run. Oliver placed 26th with a 4:50 while Bohn placed 28th with a 4:55.
The Racers' 4x400m relay team of LaShea Shaw, Sharda Bettis, Halie Holloway and Love placed 6th with a time of 46.83.
Bettis and Shaw finnished 10th and 16th in the 100m hurdles. Bettis had a time of 14.49, while Shaw was 17.72.
Christina Johnson placed 12th in the 400m run at 57.14.
Ashley Conway took 16th in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters, while Lexi Barr placed 10th in the pole vault with an effort of 3.30 meters.
Severns said the Racers performed at a high level in even in the March heat of Mississippi.
“I was super impressed today with our team,” she said. “The hard thing about the heat is that we have several who compete in multiple events and it's hard for them to get someplace where they can cool off. I'm really impressed with how we've done especially considering the heat.”
