Murray State women's track & field junior Alexis Love, the first Racer to compete in an NCAA championship since 1994, finished 15th in the prelims of the 200 at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championship in Nampa, Idaho.
The Palmetto, Fla., native finished the fifth heat of the prelims with a time of 23.85, just shy of her school record in the event of 23.66, while running on the banked track at Jackson Indoor Track at Boise State.
“This was a great weekend for Alexis and Murray State,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “Qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championship is really tough and Alexis proved that she is just that. She is consistently running fast and that is hard to do. In one weekend she brought Murray State track & field to a new level and I am so proud of her.”
Love is the first MSU athlete since Heather Samuel (1994) to compete in an NCAA track & field championship, with Samuel competing in the 1994 outdoor championships.
The Racers indoor season was a historic year, with Love and sophomore Sharda Bettis combining to set three school records. The duo also combined with freshman Tonia Pratt to claim three 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor titles.
“I couldn't be happier with the way the season ended,” added Severns.
The MSU track & field team will now start preparing for the 2012 outdoor season, with its first competition slated for March 16-17. The Racers will travel to Conway, S.C., to participate in the Shamrock Invite hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Note: Love was one of five participants in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships from the OVC.
