The Murray State men's basketball team was honored Thursday, April 12, by the Murray City Council during their regular meeting at the City Hall council chambers in Murray, Ky.
The special occasion brought a smile to all who attended as the Racers were honored for their 2011-12 season that included a 31-2 mark, the first undefeated road season in program history and highest national rankings.
Mayor Bill Wells and city council started their session by honoring the Racers in several ways.
MSU Director of Athletics Allen Ward was recognized as well as the radio voice of the Racers, Neal Bradley. MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm was honored along with the team that gave the Racer Nation the greatest season in 87 years of the program. Each student-athlete of Racer Basketball was invited to the podium to introduce themselves to Mayor Wells and the members of the council.
“We're glad to do this,” Mayor Wells said. “I was interviewed (this season) by ESPN and that wouldn't have happened if not for the 31-2 Murray State Racers. So we're glad to honor them along with the city council here on April 12.”
“That's the reason why the team was honored here tonight, because of the great sense of pride they gave the community about Murray, Ky., and Murray State University,” Prohm said. “It's great to be able to give back and to give people something to be proud of.”
The Racers were the final undefeated team in NCAA Division I basketball when they were 23-0 to start the season. MSU won their 23rd Ohio Valley Conference regular season title and their 15th OVC Tournament championship which led them into their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. MSU earned a No. 6 seed (best in program history) and defeated Colorado State in their first game before bowing out in a close game to No. 3 seed Marquette in Louisville, Ky.
The “Voice of the Racers” Neal Bradley summed the day up like this. “Every week this thing built and built. I'd go to the supermarket and everyone wanted to talk about the Racers and so did I. It was great and hopefully we can keep it going.”
