BOX SCORE
Murray State kept pulling within one run, but was never able to get over the hump as the Breds fell 4-3 to UT Martin in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (15-17, 2-6 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Jacob Rhodes blooped a single into left center and went to second on a balk. Mike Kozlowski followed with a single to left center that scored Rhodes from second.
The Skyhawks (9-21, 3-5 OVC) scratched across an unearned run in the fourth as Grant Glasser singled to start the inning and moved to second on a fielding error. After a double play groundout, Ben Campbell delivered an RBI single through the left side.
UTM took the lead in the sixth inning as they used a single and a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Matt Milligan plated one run with a chopper up the middle and Matt Young beat out an infield single to score the second run.
MSU got one run back in the bottom of the seventh as Paul Ritzheimer single to left field to start the inning. After a groundout and a wild pitch moved him to third, Travis Isaak drove him in with a groundout to third.
The Skyhawks answered back with a run in the eighth as Jordan Owen singled to start the inning and came around to score on a Campbell single to right field.
The Breds pulled within one run again in the eighth as Kozlowski walked and went to second on a groundout. Dylan Wheeler followed with a single to first base and when the flip to the pitcher rolled towards the dugout, Kozlowski raced home. A couple of walks loaded the bases with two outs, but a groundout put and end to the threat and the inning.
Tyler Beers (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, nine hits and five strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Willie Frederick (2-4) picked up the victory after allowing one run on six hits over six innings. Dan Tobik (2) picked up the save after allowing two runs on three hits and three walks over three innings.
Rhodes and Kozlowski each collected three hits, while Wheeler added two hits.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
