Murray State got seven shutout innings from Bryan Babin and got four RBIs from Travis Isaak as the Breds used a seven-run sixth inning to break open a scoreless game to hand UT Martin a 7-0 defeat Saturday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at Reagan Field. The victory gave MSU their first Ohio Valley Conference series win of the season, and was the first conference shutout since blanking the Skyhawks, 12-0, on May 9, 2009.
Babin (3-2) held the Skyhawks to just five hits and six strikeouts over his seven shutout innings. After allowing a leadoff single, Babin settled in nicely as he retired the next six hitters, striking out four. He danced around a leadoff single in the third to strand three base runners and got the final two outs of the seventh on flyouts after a single and an error threatened a rally for UTM.
The Breds (16-17, 3-6 OVC) broke open a scoreless game in a major way in the sixth as they collected six hits and pushed across seven runs in the inning. Ty Stetson started the rally with a bunt single, and then was able to trot around the bases on Isaak's two-run home run to left field. With one out, Mike Kozlowski continued the rally with a double to left center, before he scored from second on a wild pitch. Luke Daugherty reached on an error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Brandon Elliott. Dylan Wheeler followed with an RBI single up the middle. After stealing second, Rick Linton plated Wheeler with a single through the right side. Walks to Paul Ritzheimer and Stetson loaded the bases for Isaak who responded with a two-run double to right center.
Isaak led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, his NCAA-leading 19th double and four RBIs. Wheeler and Linton each added two hits.
Carter Smith (3-1) took the loss for the Skyhawks after allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits over 5.2 innings.
The Breds return to action Wednesday as they play host to Evansville at 3 p.m.
