Breds Fall 5-4 in Series Opener to Colonels

Murray State jumped out to an early lead, but it was Eastern Kentucky that rallied to take the lead and hold off the Breds over the final innings to earn a 5-4 victory Thursday afternoon at Reagan Field. With the loss, the Breds are eliminated from contention for the OVC Tournament.
The Breds (23-31, 8-17 OVC) got things going in the second inning as Brandon Eggenschwiler started a one-out rally by reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. Travis Isaak followed with a single to left field and Noah Zipko blooped a single into right center to plate the first run. Dylan Wheeler followed with an RBI single through the right side and Corey Bays blooped a single to right to load the bases. Ty Stetson drove in the third run with a fielder's choice to short.
The Colonels (29-21, 17-7 OVC) scratched across a run in fourth as Jacob Daniel started the inning with an infield single, before stealing second with two outs. Michael Garcia plated the runner with a chopper up the middle that took skipped past the second baseman.
EKU scored their second run of the game in the fifth Dustin Dunlop doubled into the left-field corner and later scored on a Richie Rodriguez sacrifice fly to left field.
The Colonels took the lead in the sixth as Daniel tripled to the fence in center field. After the next two hitters went down swinging, Garcia doubled to left center to score Daniel, and Dunlop singled through the left side to score Garcia.
EKU extended its lead in the seventh as a leadoff walk made its way to third on a single and a balk, before scoring on a fielder's choice to short.
MSU got a run back in the eighth as Jacob Rhodes and Mike Kozlowski singled to start the inning. After an Eggenschwiler sacrifice bunt and a walk to Isaak, Zipko lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.
Tyler Beers (3-7) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits and seven strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Matt Harris (5-5) picked up the victory after allowing four runs, two earned, on eight hits over 7.1 innings.
The two teams play the middle game of the three-game series Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
