Murray State sprinter Alexis Love had a fantastic weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships East Regional in Jacksonville, Fla., when she advanced to the semifinals in both the 100 and 200 meter runs.
In the process, she set a new Murray State and Ohio Valley Conference record in the 200m that had stood since 1994.
Love, a junior from Palmetto, Fla., put together two great runs in each event to advance to the NCAA Semifinal/Finals (June 6-9) at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
In the 100m first round, Love was eighth of 48 runners with a time of 11.47 which pushed her into the quarterfinals where she recorded an 11.37 to finish sixth of 27 competitors.
Later in the 200m, Love started with a 23.14 to finish seventh of 48. She came back to set the OVC and Murray State record with a time of 23.09 to finish eighth in a field of 27. Love's record time bested the 1994 mark from Heather Samuel at 23.10.
“I couldn't be happier with how this meet went for Alexis,” MSU Head Coach Jenny Severns said. “She was really strong mentally and physically. It's great for her to leave here having qualified for the final round of the NCAA's in both the 100 and 200 and she now has the time needed to also go to the Olympic Trials in the 200.”
Love's next challenge is the 100m semifinals (June 6) at 7:30 p.m. in DeMoines, Iowa. Her semifinal in the 200m happens at 5:45 p.m. (June 7).
