Day One Done - Racers Third At OVC Track & Field Championships

The Murray State Racers ended the first day of the Ohio Valley Conference Track & Field Championships in third place and turned in some stellar performances at the Abe Stuber Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
OVC Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Alexis Love breezed into the 100m finals with the fastest time of three heats at 11.52. Love also had the fastest qualifying time in the 200m sprint with a 23.53. Love had the best time in the OVC coming in with a 23.18.
OVC Freshman of the Year, Tonia Pratt took second place in the discus with a toss of 142 feet 4 inches.
Other MSU finishes included, Sydney Potts taking fourth place in the javelin with a throw of 124 feet. MSU's Kayla Crusham and Anna Grimes finished fifth and sixth in the 3000m steeplechase with times of 11:49 and 11:50. Sharda Bettis and LaShea Shaw both made the 100m hurdles final. Bettis had the second best qualifying time of 14.16, while Shaw was third at 14.36.
Ashley Conway finished third in the high jump with a leap of five feet six inches, while teammate Katie Forshey took fifth with a height of five feet 4.25 inches. In the pole vault, Lexie Barr took fifth with an effort of 11 feet 5.75 inches.
The last event of the first day was the women's 10,000 meters, where Rebecca Hbetamu and Carolyne Tanui placed fourth and sixth with times of 38:40 and 39:51.
The standings at the end of day one saw SEMO on top with 83 points, while Eastern Illinois (72.5), Murray State (43), Jacksonville State (30) and Tennessee State (14.5) made up the top-5. Austin Peay (14), Morehead State (6), Eastern Kentucky (6) and Tennessee Tech (4) rounded out the rest of the field.
The final day of the OVC Championship on Saturday for the Racers begins with hammer throw at 11:30 a.m. The Racers will also have a strong team in the 4x100m relay at 1:05 p.m.
Southeast Missouri State is the host of the 2012 OVC Championship.
