Murray State's Alexis Love brought home a sixth place finish Friday in the 100 meter championship at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Two days after she placed seventh in the semifinals with a time of 11.29, Love carded an 11.53 to take sixth place in a field of eight competitors that made it through three qualifying races over the last two weeks.
The feeling at Drake Stadium was of elation for Love and Racers' head coach Jenny Severns.
“This season has been so much fun and I've enjoyed preparing and performing,” Love said. “To be able to make it to the NCAA Championships has been a dream come true. Really, I'm speechless right now.”
"Although I was nervous and excited all day, everything felt right," Love added. "I knew I belonged in that race and it was a great experience. It made all the hard work in the past year worth it. I am overwhelmed with joy right now."
“I'm so excited for Alexis,” Severns said. “She refused to settle and came here and competed. I'm excited for her and Murray State. Alexis just scored points at the NCAA meet! That is crazy good!”
English Gardner of Oregon won the event with a time of 11.10 beating out a pair of LSU runners: Kimberlyn Duncan (11.16) and Semoy Hackett (11.33). Auburn's Kai Selvon recorded an 11.41 to finish fourth, followed by Octavious Freeman of Central Florida at 11.41 and the Racers junior Love at 11.53. The rest of the championship field included Chelsea Hayes of Louisiana Tech at 11.58 and Central Florida's Aurieyall Scott at 11.59.
At the NCAA's, Love carded times of 11:47, 11:37, 11:29 and today's 11.53. Her best time this spring of 11.28 came at the OVC Championship (May 5) in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Love also competed in the 200m semifinals, but didn't make the finals.
Love, from Palmeto, Fla., started the indoor season quickly and it was very apparent that she was capable of doing something special this 2011-12 season.
Love's season isn't over yet. She's hoping it's one that takes her all the way to London this summer for the Olympics. Love now comes back to Murray State and prepares for her shot in the 100 and 200 meter events in the USA Olympic Trials. The meet is held (June 21-25/June 28-July 1) in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon.
