Isaiah Canaan Named Candidate For AAU Sullivan Award

Murray State men's basketball student-athlete Isaiah Canaan was honored as a candidate for America's top amateur athlete by the Amateur Athletic Union of the USA as announced from AAU headquarters in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award honors the nation's outstanding amateur athlete and will be given for the 83rd time in 2013.
Canaan, from Biloxi, Miss., is a multiple All-America pick and has been a leader in the MSU basketball program on and off the floor since he arrived in Murray, Ky., in 2009.
Last year as a junior and this preseason as a senior, Canaan has been named to several All-America awards including being named to 12 different preseason awards such as the John Wooden Award, James Naismith Award and the Bob Cousy Award. Canaan is the reigning Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and the OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Canaan was also named the OVC's Male Athlete of the Year in 2012.
Canaan's collegiate career highlights include setting the Murray State made three-point baskets mark and closing on becoming a 2,000-point scorer. He also ranks among the best at MSU in career scoring, three-point percentage, assists and steals.

The Sullivan Award committee released a list of six candidates for the 2013 award that has Canaan and others including: Liz Brenner, University of Oregon Volleyball, Gabby Douglas, USA Gymnastics, AJ McCarron, University of Alabama Football, Missy Franklin, USA Swimming, Maffie Steffens, USA Water Polo and Manti Te'o, University of Notre Dame Football. The AAU will be taking additional nominations for the Sullivan Award until March 1 through its web site. The Sullivan Award, sometimes called the “Oscar” of sports awards, is named after the founder of the AAU, James Sullivan and was first given in 1930. The AAU states that the award is based on the qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, and the ideals of amateurism. Past winners of the AAU Sullivan Award include: Mark Spitz, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Florence Joyner, Peyton Manning, Michael Phelps and Tim Tebow. |
