The Murray State women's basketball team will attempt to battle back from a loss to Belmont on Monday when they host SIU Edwardsville in the front end of a doubleheader on Saturday at the CFSB Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in an effort to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
On Monday night, Belmont outscored the Murray State women's basketball team by 13 in the second half to rally from a four-point halftime deficit and leave the CFSB Center with a 59-50 win.
The first half went the Racer's way, as they battled back from an early deficit, taking the lead with 16:08 to play and never giving it back for the remainder of the stanza. Murray State (9-7, 2-3) went on to lead by as many as six in the half and took a four-point lead into the locker room at the break.
However, the second half, undoubtedly, belonged to the Bruins. Murray State led by as many 12 in the opening minutes of the half, but the Bruins did not give in. Belmont steadily chipped away at the lead for most of the half, until finally re-taking the lead with 5:44 to play and never relinquishing it.
Senior Tessa Elkins posted 10 points and 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double and fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance. Freshman Erika Sisk also had a good night, leading all scorers with 14 points.
On Tuesday, for the second-straight week and the fifth time this season, freshman Erika Sisk was named as the adidas® OVC Freshman of the Week. The Oxford, Miss., native once again had a big week for Racers, leading the team with 14.5 points per game over a 1-1 week.
The freshman shot 50 percent from behind-the-arch and also chipped in with 3.5 rebounds per game. Additionally, she averaged 3.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 0.5 blocks over the two-game span.
This makes five honors this season for Sisk, more than any other OVC freshman this season. She currently leads all OVC freshmen with 12.0 points per game and is one of just three Racers that is averaging double-digit points per game.
Saturday will be the seventh meeting between the two teams and the fourth at the CFSB Center. The Racers have won four out of the six games in the series and all three in Murray.
The Racers picked up their first win in the series at the Vadalabene Center last season with a 67-59 victory. While the two teams have met six times previous, this will only be the fourth meeting since the Cougars joined the conference.
The Cougars are currently 8-9 on the season and 2-3 on the OVC. On Monday, the Cougars snapped a two game losing streak by topping Austin Peay, 80-58, in Clarksville. Jazmin Hill led five Cougars in double-digits with 16 points, while three different players posted six rebounds each.
Raven Berry currently leads the Cougars on the year with 12.7 points and 8.9 rebounds. Tierny Austin is also averaging double-digits this season with 11.6 points.
