Competing in their second match of the weekend, Murray State's rifle team traveled to Martin, Tenn. for a dual match with OVC foe, UT Martin. After finishing fourth in the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday, the Racers fell short to the Skyhawks, 4565-4550.
Like Saturday, the Racers brought six student-athletes to compete in the match. "We split the team this weekend, so that everyone had the chance to compete and I could evaluate them all under the pressure of match conditions," said Coach Lollar. "I was pretty pleased all the way around."
Murray State scored higher in the smallbore discipline, 2267-2253, but the Skyhawks got the better of them in air rifle, 2312-2283.
Competing in her first ever match, freshman Keri Marlin fired a 576 to lead all shooters in smallbore. At air rifle, Marlin shot a 568, the third highest on the team and led the Racers with an 1144 aggregate score. Lollar was pleased with his freshman, saying she "had a very nice first match".
Senior Michael Burzynski led all Racers in the air rifle, shooting a 578. His total placed him third overall in the discipline and his 1136 aggregate was good for second on the team.
Also competing in his first collegiate match was freshman Sam Harris. Harris scored a 560 SB and 571 AR for an aggregate of 1131. Following the match Lollar said Harris "competed well and showed promise."
Regarding his freshmen, Coach Lollar said "I had some young shooters take their first steps toward becoming good."
Marisca Mozeleski (570 SB, 560 AR) Ryan Limpus (561 SB, 566 AR) and Hannah Harris (496 SB, 537 AR) also shot for MSU. Mozeleski fired a team second-best 570 in the smallbore and finished with an 1130 aggregate.
The Racers will have two weeks to prepare for their upcoming tri-match with Morehead State and Columbus State. That match will be MSU's home opener and will take place in the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range Sunday, Oct. 20.Â
