The Murray State Racers play their home opener for the 2013-14 season Tuesday when they host the Brescia Bearcats in a 7 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The Racer Radio Network will air the game on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Live online streaming video from OVCDigitalNetwork.com is free of charge.
In the modern era which began with the formation of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948, the Racers are 62-3 in home openers and have won 23 straight since their last loss in 1989 at old Racer Arena to Southern Illinois in triple overtime. MSU has won all of their home openers at the CFSB Center numbering 15 straight. MSU's other home opening losses came to West Virginia Tech in 1982 and to Tennessee Wesleyan in 1978. MSU opened their home season a year ago with a win over Brescia.
The Racers (0-1) opened their season last Friday with a hard-fought 77-74 loss at Valparaiso. MSU trailed by 12 with 12:27 remain, but battled back and had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final 2:30. Freshman Cameron Payne made his MSU debut with 21 points to go with five rebounds and four assists, while Dexter Fields and Tyler Rambo each added 12 points. Jarvis Williams debuted with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Payne's 21-point debut at Valpo makes him the first MSU freshman to score 20 in a game since Isaiah Canaan's 22 against Eastern Kentucky in 2010.
The CFSB Center is in its 16th season as the Racers' home court where they have enjoyed one of the best winning percentages in the college game. MSU was 10-4 at home last season and are 182-32 (.850) overall and 74-10 (.877) against non-OVC opponents.
Head Coach Steve Prohm begins his third season with the Racers as he ranks high among accomplishments for any coach in NCAA D-I through their first two seasons. Prohm, the fastest MSU coach to 50 victories, joins Tevester Anderson as the only MSU coaches to win at least 20 games in their first two seasons. Prohm ranks 11th all-time among his NCAA D-I peers in making it to 50 wins in only 59 games. Additionally, he's eighth all-time with 52 wins in his first two seasons as head coach.
Brescia enters the game 2-1 after an 87-45 win (Nov. 8) against Boyce College. Before that, the Bearcats split two games in Cincinnati with an 84-81 overtime loss to Ohio Christian and an 82-76 win over Kentucky Christian. Head Coach Josh Gibson is a native of Murray, Ky., and a Murray State grad. He served on staff with the Racers under coaches Billy Kennedy & Steve Prohm in 2007-08 and 2011-12.
After the mid-week home game, the Racers hit the road for Norfolk, Va., and a Friday 6 p.m. CT game at Old Dominion. The Racers beat the Monarchs at home last season 79-72. Next Tue (Nov. 19), the Racers are back at the CFSB Center for a game against the Bethel Wildcats.
