Payne Earns OVC Freshman Of the Week Honor

Murray State men's basketball student-athlete Cameron Payne was honored with the Freshman of the Week award in the Ohio Valley Conference in a vote by the league's sports information directors.
Payne, earned the honor by his debut performance in Friday's season opener at Valparaiso.
Payne, from Bartlett, Tenn., scored a game-high 21 points in Murray State's season-opening 77-74 loss at defending Horizon
League champion Valparaiso. Payne connected on 4-of-10 3-pointers, dished out a team-high four assists, grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots and had a steal in 36 minutes of action.
He is the first MSU freshman to score 20 points in a game since Isaiah Canaan had 22 points against Eastern Kentucky in 2010. Payne was the first MSU player to score 20 points in his first game following the 27 Antoine Whelchel scored against Gardner Webb in 2000.
Other candidates for the weekly award included: Isaac McGlone of Eastern Kentucky, Greg Dotson of Morehead State and Antonius Cleveland of Southeast Missouri.
Payne and the Racers will play their home opener Tuesday at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., in a 7 p.m. tip against Brescia.
