The Murray State women's basketball team will look to stay undefeated on the season Saturday when it travels to in-state rival Western Kentucky.
The Racers stayed undefeated on the young season Monday by picking up a 62-50win at Evansville. The win was the first in Evansville since 1997 and the first-ever in the brand new Ford Center.
MSU trailed just briefly in the game, but was in control for the majority of the contest. The Racers went on to lead by as many 14 midways through the second half, but the Purple Aces were able to cut the lead to just five with 4:38 to play. However, a 3-pointer by Nikia Edom with 1:55 remaining kick-started a 10-3 run by MSU to end the contest.
Edom and Keiona Kirby led the Racers with a game-high 13 points, while Jessica Winfrey led the team on the boards with 17. Jashae Lee also had a big night by recording her first double-double as a Racer with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The Murray State-Western Kentucky series is one of the longest ones in the history of both programs, dating back all the way to Feb. 16, 1929. The Lady Toppers have dominated the series over the years, winning 34 of the 43 contests. Six of Murray State's nine wins in the series have come in Murray, while the Racers have won just two of the 23 meetings in Bowling Green.
Western Kentucky enters Saturday's game having won each of the last 12 meetings overall and each of the last 19 contests at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. Last year, the Lady Toppers kept the overall streak alive by besting MSU, 80-69, in Murray in the season openers for both teams.
The last win in the series for MSU came in 1989 at Racer Arena in Murray, while the last win in Bowling Green for the Racers came in 1975 and was the last game of the longest winning streak in the series by MSU of four games.

The Lady Toppers are currently 1-1 on the season having topped Austin Peay at home, 78-75, but falling at Vanderbilt, 85-60. WKU trailed Vandy by just six points at the half, but was outscored 48-29 in the second stanza to seal the win for the Commodores. Alexis Govan led the Lady Toppers with 18 points, while Bianca McGee came off the bench to score 15.
McGee currently leads WKU on the season, scoring an average of 18 points per game, while Chastity Gooch leads the rebounding category by averaging a double-double of 10.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Through two games, WKU is averaging 69.0 point per game, while giving up 80.0. The Lady Toppers are currently shooting 35.3 percent from the floor, 31.7 from 3-point range and 57.4 from the free throw line.
