The Murray State women's basketball team will kick-off the 2013-14 season Sunday with an exhibition against Berea.
It will be a new beginning of sorts for the Racers, as they return just one starter and three additional players that saw minutes from last year's squad. Jessica Winfrey returns for her senior season after averaging 4.6 points and 7.8 rebounds a year ago as a starter, while junior Keiona Kirby will move into a bigger role for 2013-14 after contributing 4.7 points in 11 minutes a game last season.
Looking to help the returning players will be a bevy of freshman including a pair of Kentucky All-State selections in Lawrence County's Taylor Porter and Murray High's Janssen Starks. Also looking to make an immediate impact will be junior college transfer Jashae Lee. Lee comes to MSU after averaging 11 points and seven boards per game for New Mexico JC last season, where she earned All-Conference and All-Region honors for her efforts.
Berea will enter Sunday just a day after opening their season with a 95-85 win at Mid-Continent. The win was the first for new head coach Trent Milby, who inherits a squad that went 13-17 a year ago and 8-8 in the KIAC.
After averaging the second-most points per game for the Mountaineers last season, at 9.0, Johnesha Warren picked up where she left off in the opener with 22 points, including a 7-for-10 performance from the free throw line. Katelyn Butler led Berea in the contest with 24 points, including going 5-for-8 from 3-point range, while Kaitlynne Smith added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
