Coming off their win at the MSU tri-match over No. 3 Jacksonville State and No. 4 TCU, Murray State rifle traveled to Columbus, Ohio for the Buckeye Open. The team suffered a bit of a letdown, scoring 2272 in the smallbore and 2336 in the air rifle for an aggregate 4608, finishing in third place out of five teams.Â
Junior Kelsey Emme led both the smallbore and air rifle for the Racers. She scored a team-best 576 smallbore and a 586 air rifle, finishing in the top five in both disciplines. Emme was fourth overall in the air rifle and seventh in the smallbore.
Sophomore Tessa Howald finished with the top air rifle, scoring 589. She recorded the second-best score in the competition and was the highest overall finisher for the Racers. Freshman Jack Berhorst had a solid day shooting a 570 in the smallbore and 580 in the air rifle, coming in 12th and 17th respectively.Â
Following the match, Head Coach Alan Lollar discussed his team, saying "We did not get it done today. There were some good things individually at times, but as a team it was disappointing. We have one match left before Christmas Break, at Jacksonville State. We'll see how we bounce back. This team is good enough to compete with anyone. Nothing has changed. It's time to get up and compete."
As mentioned, the team has one competition left before Christmas break. That's Nov. 23 at the Gamecock Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville State.Â
