The Murray State women's basketball team will look to tie its season-high win streak of seven on Monday when it returns to OVC play against Tennessee State at the CFSB Center at 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Racers won their sixth consecutive game when they closed out their non-conference slate with a 69-56 win at New Orleans. The game looked to be well in hand early, as the Racers jumped out to a big advantage and led by as many as 23 with 3:56 left in the half.
However, New Orleans did not go away without a fight. The Lady Privateer closed out the half on an 11-0 run, including three consecutive 3-pointers, to cut the lead to 32-20 at the break.
In the second half, UNO continued to keep pace with the Racers and scored just one point less than MSU in the final frame. The Lady Privateers cut the lead to eight on multiple occasions; however, the Racers buckled down and held on for the 13-point win.
Senior Mariah Robinson notched her second consecutive double-double and fourth of the season with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Erika Sisk also had 21 points, while junior Erica Burgess led the Racer bench with 10. Jessica Winfrey also had a good night for MSU as she pulled down 10 boards to go along with two points.
On Tuesday, Erika Sisk was named as the adidas® OVC Co-Freshman of the Week for games played Jan. 29 to Feb. 4, the league announced on Tuesday. Also honored with Sisk was SIU Edwardsville freshman CoCo Moore.
Sisk led the Racers in their lone game last week, a win over Austin Peay, with 19 points, while also adding two rebounds and three assists. The Oxford, Miss., native shot 38.8 percent from the field in the game, while also notching two 3-pointers and a trio of free throws.
This marks the eighth time this season that Sisk has won the award, more than any other league freshman. She has also now claimed the honor for five consecutive weeks.
Monday will be the 53rd meeting all-time between the Racers and Tennessee State, with MSU holding a 32-20 lead. Murray State also leads the series in both Murray and Nashville, enjoying an 18-8 advantage at home and a 14-12 lead on the road.
The Racers have also won six of the last 10 meetings and three of the last five. MSU won both meetings last season, sweeping the series for the first time since 2009.
Tennessee State will enter Monday's match up at 9-12 overall and 5-5 in league play. After starting the season at 4-8, the Lady Tigers have now won five of their last nine.
On Saturday, TSU shot over 40 percent from the floor and five different player reached double-digits, as they topped Austin Peay, 71-52, in Clarksville. Jasmin Shuler led the charge with 14 points, while Chelsea Hudson notched her third career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Kessi Hess currently leads the Lady Tigers with 12.0 points per game, while Simone Hopes averages a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game. The Tigers are currently averaging 60.7 points per game, while allowing 64.2.
