The Murray State women's basketball team dropped a tough 73-59 decision on the road to Eastern Illinois on Saturday at Lantz Arena in Charleston. Despite the loss, senior Mariah Robinson scored her 1,500th career point to become just the fourth Racer in program history to score 1,500 points and pull down at least 500 rebounds.
The game started out cold for both teams as they combined to miss the first 13 shots of the game. Once they found the bucket, the Panthers (17-8, 10-2) took control for the majority of the half and led by eight at the break.
After half time, the Racers opened the second stanza on an 11-0 run and took their first lead since just over four minutes into the game. Despite the surge, Eastern Illinois fought back and eventually pushed the lead out to double digits. Murray State was able to cut the deficit to nine with 5:39 left, but that would be as close as they would get and eventually fell by 14.
The Racers did not shoot poorly in the contest and finished the night at 37.7 percent from the field. That 37.7 percent included a 33.3 percent effort from behind-the-arc that was fueled, in large part, by five 3-pointers from Robinson.
The discrepancy, however, came down to rebounds and points in the paint. The Racers were outrebounded 51-32 in the contest, including 20 to 10 on the offensive glass, and scored 22 points in the paint, compared to 40 by the Panthers.
Robinson led Murray State with 17 points, while freshman Erika Sisk had 14. Junior Jessica Winfrey pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while freshman Kelsey Dirks followed with eight to go along with nine points.
Mariah King led four Panthers in double-digits with 21 points, while Ta”Kenya Nixon had 15. Sabina Oroszova led all rebounders in the contest with a game-high 11 boards.
The Racers will look to snap a two-game skid on Monday when they travel to SIU Edwardsville. Tip-off from the Vadalabene Center is set for 7 p.m.
