The Murray State women's basketball team will look to skid on Monday night when it s to SIU Edwardsville.
On Saturday, the Racers lost their second straight game by falling at Eastern Illinois, 73-59. Despite the loss, senior Mariah Robinson scored her 1,500th career point to become just the fourth Racer in program history to score 1,500 points and pull down at least 500 rebounds.
The game started out cold for both teams as they combined to miss the first 13 shots of the game. Once they found the bucket, the Panthers took control for the majority of the half and led by eight at the break.
After half time, the Racers opened the second stanza on an 11-0 run and took their first lead since just over four minutes into the game. Despite the surge, Eastern Illinois fought back and eventually pushed the lead out to double digits. Murray State was able to cut the deficit to nine with 5:39 left, but that would be as close as they would get and eventually fell by 14.
The Racers did not shoot poorly in the contest and finished the night at 37.7 percent from the field. That 37.7 percent included a 33.3 percent effort from behind-the-arc that was fueled, in large part, by five 3-pointers from Robinson.
The discrepancy, however, came down to rebounds and points in the paint. The Racers were outrebounded 51-32 in the contest, including 20 to 10 on the offensive glass, and scored 22 points in the paint, compared to 40 by the Panthers.
Robinson led Murray State with 17 points, while freshman Erika Sisk had 14. Junior Jessica Winfrey pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while freshman Kelsey Dirks followed with eight to go along with nine points.
Monday will be the eighth meeting between the two teams and the fourth at the Vadalabene Center. The Racers have won five out of the seven games in the series and all four in Murray.
The Racers picked up their first win in the series at the Vadalabene Center last season with a 67-59 victory. While the two teams have met seven times previous, this will only be the fifth meeting since the Cougars joined the conference.
The Cougars are currently 12-13 on the season and 6-7 in the OVC. The Cougars are coming off of a tough loss 67-53 loss to Austin Peay on Saturday. Raven Berry had a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Tierny Austin added 14 boards of her own.
Berry currently leads the Cougars in both categories major categories with 14.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. The Cougars currently average 61.9 points per game, while allowing 61.9.
Monday's game will be carried live on Froggy 103.7 with Kyle Rogers bringing fans all the action. Live stats and a free video stream, courtesy of the OVC Digital Network, will also be available with links available for both at Go Racers.com
