The Murray State women's basketball team will host rival UT Martin on Saturday at the CFSB Center in its penultimate home game of the 2012-13 season.
The Racers ran into a red-hot SIU Edwardsville team on Monday night that shot 66.7 percent and scored 55 points in the second half to top the MSU, 79-68.
The Racers came ready to play in the first with Tessa Elkins scoring the first eight points for MSU and giving them the early lead. The Cougars chipped away at the lead for the rest of the half, but it was Murray State that took a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, SIU Edwardsville, quite simply couldn't miss. The Cougars opened up the frame on a 12-2 run and never looked back.
Late in the half, the Racers were able to cut the lead to just five with 5:19 to play thanks in part to three big 3-pointers from junior Keiona Kirby. However, SIU Edwardsville sealed the win after a timeout by going on a 10-1 run that took away any momentum that MSU had built.
Elkins led all scorers in the contest with 17 points, while Kirby and freshman Erika Sisk followed with 15 and 14, respectively. Sisk also led MSU on the boards with eight, while Jessica Winfrey and Mariah Robinson followed with six each.
Saturday will be the 68th meeting between the two teams, with UT Martin holding a narrow 34-33 advantage.
The Racers put an end to six-game skid in the series earlier this season when they captured an 82-72 win at Skyhawk Arena. The win was the first in the series for MSU since Jan. 30, 2010 and the first in Martin since Jan. 5, 2009. The Racers are now 18-13 in Murray and 14-20 at Skyhawk Arena.
Since the two teams began playing twice a year in 1991, UT Martin has swept the regular-season series nine times and the series has been split five times. Should the Racers win on Saturday, it would be their eighth series sweep and first since 2009.
The Skyhawks are currently 13-14 overall this season and 7-6 in OVC play. On Monday, UT martin won its second straight game by picking up a 77-58 win at Tennessee State. The pairing of Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler outscored the entire Tennessee State team by themselves by scoring 31 points each.
Butler and Newsome currently lead the Skyhawks on the season by averaging 22.1 and 21.6 points per game, respectively. The duo's combined 43.0 points per game, currently accounts for 60.6 percent of UT Martin's total offense.
Saturday's game will be carried live on WNBS 1340 AM with Kyle Rogers bringing fans all the action starting at 1:45 p.m. Live stats and a free video stream, courtesy of the OVC Digital Network, will also be available with links available for both at Go Racers.com.
